About Saint Paul

Saint Paul, Minnesota’s capital city, combines the old, the new and the unique! Visitors marvel at Saint Paul’s Old World charm. Summit Avenue boasts one of the longest stretches of uninterrupted original Victorian architecture in the United States--beginning at the European-style Saint Paul Cathedral and running to the Mississippi River. Downtown Saint Paul features a number of historic buildings including the State Capitol and breathtaking views of the Mississippi River.

 Mississippi River

Saint Paul was born on the banks of America’s greatest river-way, the Mississippi River. As "Wild West" adventure seekers flooded into the area by steamboat, Saint Paul quickly developed a rich and exciting culture. Saint Paul was built on river shipping and railroad industries. James J. Hill, the richest man in America in his day, founded the Great Northern Railroad right in St. Paul. Minneapolis was built upon the milling industry, where companies like Pillsbury and Gold Medal Flour began. Immigrants from Sweden, Ireland, Germany, and Italy made up the area’s primary ethnic groups in the 1800s. Today, Saint Paul continues to be an exciting city, featuring some of the Midwest’s greatest museums, world-class theater and fun and entertaining attractions.

Gangster Past

This saintly city of cathedrals, culture and Old World charm was once the sinful city of speakeasies, brothel madams and gangster trials. During the Gangster era, Saint Paul was a safe haven for Chicago mobsters, largely because Police Chief John O’Connor developed a system whereby gangsters would not be prosecuted as long as they did not commit crimes within the city of Saint Paul. This system protected the citizens, and also encouraged the gangsters to come into the city to spend money. The Wabasha Street Caves and Landmark Center are the best places to catch a glimpse into this unique history.

 Skyways

Saint Paul’s skyways are enclosed pedestrian walkways that connect virtually all of downtown and keep visitors comfortable no matter what the weather brings. Skyway Maps (which are perfect when spending the day in Downtown St. Paul or Downtown Minneapolis) are available free in most building desks throughout the skyway.

Twin Cities

The Twin Cities is the combined metro area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The Mississippi River flows between the two cities, and the Downtowns are about 7 miles apart. You can compare Minneapolis to Dallas and Saint Paul to Fort Worth (though both cities are smaller than those TX counterparts). The combined metro area population is about 1 million.
